Torres del Paine National Park, Chile

bdmetronews Desk ॥ Guanacos, gentle herbivores native to the mountains of South America, are relatives of llamas and camels.

They’re especially populous in the mountains of Patagonia, where our photographer captured this guanaco inside the boundaries of Chile’s Torres del Paine National Park. And where you see one, there’s likely to be many others close by.
Herds are divided by gender, with small herds of female guanacos and their young, called chulengos, roaming with a single, dominant male.
Younger males tend to group in much larger herds, with sometimes as many as 50 roaming the arid hills. The guanaco isn’t Chile’s national animal, but it could certainly be an ambassador for Torres del Paine.
