Bürresheim Castle in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany

bdmetronews Desk ॥ The castle of Bürresheim is located at northwest of Mayen on a rock spur in the Nettetal. It belongs to the local church Sankt Johann.

Set on a rock spur above a small tributary of the river Rhine, Bürresheim Castle is an intact example of successive eras in German architecture. For such an old structure – building began in the mid-12th century – the castle’s in very good condition.

It was lucky enough to avoid the fate of most other Rhineland castles – it’s one of only a handful not damaged or destroyed during warfare over the years. Due to this unscathed history, the original 12th-century keep and various additions made up until the 17th century remain much as they were originally.

Here, medieval styles mix and merge with later epochs, both in the living quarters as well as in the Baroque gardens.
